I confess I have a soft spot for hot chocolate, preferably made with milk with a bit of whipping cream if available. Marshmallows on top are a plus. All through January I've had a hot chocolate station set up on the corner of the kitchen island with a choice of either milk chocolate or mint chocolate.
Knowing my winter fixation, my sweet MIL gave me a huge basket of chocolate drink fixings and snacks for Christmas! I've happily added the basket to my island setup.
Between our recent snow and ice storms — spurred on by a week of ultra low temps for Georgia — we invited her to join us last Sunday for a Valentine's sweet treats and hot chocolate buffet!
I had picked up an assortment of scrumptious desserts for my recent design for a Valentine's blog hop. That tablescape with all its romantic details can be found in Artistry and Romance — A Valentine's Table. The two of us couldn't possibly eat all the goodies so they were an obvious choice for Sunday's afternoon buffet. While an assortment of wines were available, Greg, MIL and myself all selected hot chocolate.
There was a vanilla cake covered in white chocolate icing and sprinkles, raspberry Linzer cookies dusted with powdered sugar, mini sugar cookies with pink icing, and milk chocolate hearts!
My favorites were the cake and Linzer cookies. I served the cake on a New Martinsville pedestal plate that my mother received as a wedding gift. The elegant glass was etched in the 'Prelude' pattern.
Now for the basket! There are packets of double chocolate, two flavors of chocolate bombs, and four flavors of stir spoons for making cups of hot chocolate. There's also peppermint sprinkled chocolate stirrers and the cutest mini spoons!
To munch on we had Dutch caramel wafer cookies, Italian shortbread cookies and sea salt caramel chocolate squares. I placed tiny marshmallows in a small vintage biscuit barrel; the cut glass contrasts nicely with the woven grass tray which I'm sure will be the base for many impromptu vignettes. She also included a tin of English breakfast tea. Its pretty design on a pink background is perfect for Valentine's Day.
I set out pedestal mugs I've had since my daughter was seven or so.
Then to complete the festive buffet I styled the glassware cabinet in Valentine hearts.
Meanwhile Finn practiced his very best ESP for a cookie or two. After all, if the people were having goodies, he'd like some too! Preferably peanut butter with lots of crunch.
On the other hand, patient Jake knows he'll get something good.
