Patterns in Blue for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving will be here before you know it — the holiday when we give thanks for all the good things in life. And the best way to celebrate is around a table, sharing traditions, good food and good spirits with family and friends!

I truly enjoy setting tables, but especially those for holidays! Although we will be traveling to our daughter's for Thanksgiving, I've still set a Thanksgiving table that we will use the following week.  So the table I've designed is not quite formal, but still elegant. It's based on patterns in blue spiced with copper accents.

Today I'm thrilled to be joining seventeen friends who are sharing their Thanksgiving tables. Organized by Rita of Panoply, the participants' links are provided at the end of this post. You are sure to be inspired by their creativity for setting your own table!

I started with a damask table runner with a traditional design in shades of blue on white, that I first used on a table for la FĂȘte nationale. I like using table runners to provide pattern and/or color while allowing the beautiful tones of the wood table to shine.

The place settings begin with copper charges that my daughter gave me. I love their hammered finish! Embossed white salad plates sit between vintage dinner and bread plates with a pronounced design in navy on a different white base. The silverware we received as wedding gifts is timeless and makes an appearance at most dinners in the dining room.

On the table runner are two arrangements of pumpkins and acorns on either side of  a vase of faux flowers.

Vintage cobalt blue cut-to-clear crystal is paired with older etched elegant glassware in topaz.

(In cut-to-clear crystal, a layer of colored crystal overlays the clear blank. Cuts are made to the outer layer that extend through the colored overlay into the clear crystal with striking results. I described the difference between depression glass and elegant glass in Mums Lead the Way to Fall.)

More shades of blue are found in the navy napkins with stylized florals, and

in the solid cornflower blue linen napkins, which have a lovely texture. The patterned napkins are at four of the place settings; the solid ones are at each end. Both types are held by copper napkin rings that have a matte finish.

Echoing the copper dishware are pumpkins, acorns and berries in shades of orange and gold.

The "vase" is a hammered copper pitcher. I love the swoop of the handle!

Amber votives seem to glow in the sunlight.

The morning light was perfect for photos in my dining room.

The overhead angle shows the patterns and shades of blue.

I added pheasant feathers and stems of cotton to the flowers for height and drama.

The buffet was treated to a display of pumpkins and acorns to coordinate with the table. Copper pillar candles sit on tall crystal candlesticks.

A figural turkey plate was added. Although I have a selection of china I use for fall and Thanksgiving dinners, this is my only turkey plate. Hmmmm . . .

I love the combination of blue and copper or amber!

Since they are complementary colors, they are natural partners, pairing copper's warmth with cool blues.

Candlelight softens the colors.

  2. Gorgeous, Sandra! It was the light that immediately drew my attention to these wonderful shades of complementary blues with copper on this table. That overhead shot showing the centerpiece with the place settings is killer! Your entire room is swathed in that beautiful blue that inspires me to keep adding blue to my own decor. It's just so inviting. Your stemware is a perfect pick for elevating all that is already quite an elegant tablescape. Enjoy your Thanksgiving at your daughter's!

    1. Thanks so much, Jenna! I love having turkey for Thanksgiving meals, but I confess I don't find turkeys themselves cute or beautiful. I guess that's why I never indulged in turkey plates LOL. This one though, is pretty.

Your table runner is so pretty with the pumpkins and acorns. The copper chargers really frame the blue and white dinnerware. Candle light is always soothing and adds ambiance. Always a pleasure to join you. Happy Thanksgiving.

  9. Sandra I am a lover of copper anything...I even have a set of copper cookware that I have NEVER used (because I love it displayed on a vintage, floor, pot holder stand like the one from Downton Abby) I, of course, have the copper mules and pitchers and platters... BUT I do not have the hammered copper chargers like your lovely ones, but I will have to check into them for sure. Your blue walls are stunning and your blue and copper table is cozy and warm. Happy Thanksgiving

  17. Sandra, what a lovely table in a very elegant room. It is like looking at a photo from a home and garden magazine. The perfect combination of copper and blue is a stunning table choice. And the morning light on your table adds so much warmth and sparkle from your copper and looks so inviting. I enjoy your use of various blue and white patterns in your runner and napkins that complement each other and works with the copper chargers and napkin rings. The floral centerpiece and pumpkins pulls it all together. The turkey plate on your buffet makes for a lovely decor piece with all of your pumpkins. Your guests will feel so at home and special at this table. Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely comments! As far as the photo goes, I had a lot of help from the morning sunshine. I've been going more and more crazy over copper pieces and love using them in the fall. Since I'm also smitten with blue in all its shades, the combo came naturally to me. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  18. Sandra, you have set a very elegant, timeless tablescape. I love the blue and copper paired together. Also the way you have combined the different patterns really makes an impact. The runner is gorgeous and I would be tempted to leave it on my table all the time! The antique plates are lovely. I almost wish they weren't antique as I would love to find some like them! Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Thank you, Maureen for your sweet comments! I love using table linens and envisioning what I can pair with them. The vintage Blue Danube plates can be found readily at "antique" malls, consignment stores, ebay and Replacements. They were produced over a period of time so their prices are very reasonable.

  19. Sandra, this may be a duplicate comment as the first one didn't seem to save! But, your table really is classically elegant. Love the way you have mixed and matched the different patterns in the runner, napkins and plates. The hammered copper chargers are gorgeous. I almost wish the blue patterned plates weren't antique, as I would love to find some similar!

    1. Thanks again, Maureen! Not all blues are ideal partners, but most can be mixed pleasingly. The copper chargers are even prettier in person!

  20. Sandra, I know how much you love tablescapes, and your talent for pulling them together. I just learned something about the cut-to-clear crystal. My aunt had this same pattern in a cranberry. I always admired its beauty. I do have some etched glasses that I was given many years ago and love how elegant they are! Mixing the colors together really wows me!
    Happy Thanksgiving hugs,

    1. Thanks, Rachelle! I can get lost in the world of vintage and antique crystal. Some of the piece types are pretty but would look out of place on our modern tables. But the stemware! The colors and designs are beautiful. And they bring unique style to our tables. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
