Flowers have long been associated with celebrations and remembrances of all kinds, so they are a natural choice for setting a table for Mother's Day. Today I'm sharing a table with a profusion of flowers that is a stylish way to celebrate all the mothers in your life.
Flowers fill my memories — my grandmother's kitchen full of African violets and lily of the valley nosegays; my mom's deep red rosebushes mingled with bridal wreath spirea; and my MIL's desire for colorful bloomers in her garden (see her on-going saga on A Landscape Renovation, From the Beginning).
The centerpiece of the table, both literally and figuratively, is a vase
overflowing with a selection of flowers in multiple colors set amid those on a lovely table runner that repeats the same colors.
My choice of dishware was inspired both by my mom's love of birds and her fascination with Asian design. Mottled gold chargers with an interesting edge serve as the base for dinner plates encircled with flowers and geometric designs, and salad plates depicting a striking stork outlined in gold. These are set at the four places on the sides of the table.
For the place settings at either end of the table I used the salad plates that match the dinner plates. Amidst the flowers stand blue-feathered cranes. The place settings are completed by two types of glassware, napkins and flatware in an angular shape that I've had for a number of years but not featured in a post.
I like that the table unmistakably reads "springtime" and can be used throughout the season.
A close-up of the variety of shapes and colors in the centerpiece — did you realize they were faux? Lovely well-made silk plants are versatile and allow you to combine types that may not share the same bloom times. They add floral charm whenever needed!
I love the lavish sprinkling of blooms on the table linens which my sister gave me. I also chose the linens when styling Summertime Gardens for the Table.
I love the intricate scene in the center of these salad plates. (The pattern is also on the dinner plates.) It has a more traditional look that my mom surely would have loved as well. Why not use all the same salad plates? Using different salad plates for the place settings adds another layer of interest.
The napkin rings pair perfectly with the plates!
The cranberry wine glasses dovetail with the pink shades of the flowers, while the vintage iced tea glasses feature wispy tendrils carefully etched.
I kept adding more flowers until I was pleased with how full the arrangement was,
To complete the tablescape I added lavender pillar candles in simple hurricanes on either side of the flowers.
Thanks for visiting! You may also enjoy seeing A Brunch for Mother's Day that I set with the china I inherited from my mom.
