If you want to decorate for autumn but don't know where to start, one of the easiest ways is to group your favorite fall items together on a tray. By styling them this way and placing the tray near your front door you'll create a
lovely autumn welcome for all visitors to your home!
Thank you for joining me and a creative group of bloggers today for a tour of our autumn trays coordinated by Katherine of Katherine's Corner. If you've just come from Decorative Inspirations — welcome! I know you enjoyed Meagan's tray as much as I did.
For my fall tray I continued my personal challenge to design with only the things I already had (with one exception I'll talk about below). But of course if you find something while shopping
that would be perfect for your tray, use that to inspire your style!
Our house has a two-story foyer that is flanked by the living room and dining room on either side, then opens to a family/great room. There's a lot going on visually, although the foyer itself does not have a lot of square footage. So I tend to keep seasonal decor here to a minimum, usually limiting it to the chest. Which is perfect for styling trays and other types of vignettes!
Because the ceilings are high I generally use tall vases with long-stemmed florals. To balance the apparent mass of the creamy silk flowers I styled my tray with a variety of items in vibrant autumn colors and allowed the items to spill off the tray to increase their visual weight.
The pillar candle becomes the focal point, surrounded by autumn hues and natural textures. There's a smooth gold glass pumpkin with a stem that sparkles next to a round ornament that was hand-crafted of methodically gathered pheasant feathers by a native Hawaiian artisan.
A ceramic quail is nestled among several mini pumpkins and squash (all faux). All the colors are offset by the beautifully made wooden box bought long ago at an artists' fair.
On the other side is a larger pheasant feather ornament which blends into the quail's ceramic plumage. I delightedly bought the feather ornaments I've used here directly from the artist on Maui when we spent a wonderful vacation there in September. For more texture I added raffia balls, another glass pumpkin and one of the acorns I've had for a number of years.
These silk flowers were a bit of a splurge when I got them a dozen years ago. They remind me of the flowers found in Old Master paintings — and those on the salad plates I used in Mums Lead the Way to Fall.
For the tray itself, I used one of my favorite silverplate trays, a favorite because of the lovely handle detail. It's also one of the larger round ones I have. I confess to owning about 15 round trays and a handful of larger and smaller rectangular ones. Several were wedding presents and the others were found antiquing. Silverplate trays are inexpensive and are indispensable when entertaining larger groups of people. They hold lots of hors d'oeuvres, mini deserts or specialty drinks for parties. I also use them as chargers for dinners. I'm looking forward to entertaining like that again — it's been far too long!!
The ceramic quail by Fitz and Floyd isa lidded box, though I've never used it that way. It's one of a pair.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Laura, for stopping by and leaving your sweet comments!
DeleteI love all of the colors and textures on your tray, Sandra. The feathered ornament is gorgeous and I love the gold glass pumpkin. Fall has arrived at your house!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ann! Textures and colors really define Fall and provide lots of inspiration!
DeleteHi Sandra, love the combination of the quail and the ceramic pumpkins. It's colorful and really welcomes Fall. I'm a fan of silver trays so it was nice to see how you incorporated yours into the display.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lynne! I think silver trays bring that something extra to wherever and whenever they're used. Glad you stopped by!
DeleteOhmygosh Sandra - the first thing that popped into my mind was "Old Master!!" Your tapestry and flowers are absolutely stunning! And your tray complements them so well! I love your little quail and the feather balls - all of it's lovely! Thanks for the fabulous inspiration - I see some redecorating in my future. :) Always fun touring with you! Happy Fall!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Barbara! We’ve had the tapestry for awhile, the flowers not as long. I used to transition the flowers on the chest seasonally, but haven’t really done so since I got these flowers. I love how life-like they are and how they seem to have been made to go with the tapestry. So my foyer decorating tends to complement both. I’’m glad you thought I rose to the challenge.!
DeleteSandra, you have an eye for detail, and it shows not only in your tray but on the rich tapestry hanging over that beautiful table. The feather balls add tons of character and texture to the design.
ReplyDeleteHappy October hugs,
Rachelle
What a lovely thing to say, Rachelle! Thank you! I think a two-story entry calls for something in scale — and a bit of drama never hurts! I was entranced with the chest the moment I saw it — it was made in France and has such personality. Have a great week!
DeleteYour tray is beautiful Sandra, and I love the combination of Fall elements! The quail is my favorite and those feather ornaments are swoon worthy! I love your pumpkins with the swirly stems and the way you tucked in the berries and leaves for texture and contrast. A lovely welcome into your home!
ReplyDeleteJenna
Thank you for the lovely comments, Jenna! I knew when I bought the feather ornaments that I would use them as soon as we got home. Their intricacy is really astounding! And the best part is having met the artist!
DeleteIt looks wonderful! The quail box is such a nice surprise, I never would have guessed it opened and has a twin ( smile). Thank you for joining in the fun. Pinned! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Katherine! And thank you for pinning as well. The box lid fits so well that you don’t at first notice that the quail is in two pieces. Thank you again for organizing the tour — there was so much to see and drool over!
DeleteThis is a beautiful tray and with such rich and warm colors. I really love the feathered ornaments. So beautiful. Loved the tour in your home!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angie! I was inspired by the patterns and textures in the ornaments and the the tray itself. It was fun touring with you!
