The Colorful Summer Garden

When last we met in the garden it was late April, after the spring bulbs and shrubs had brought delight to the front gardens.

May arrived with Japanese, bearded and Siberian irises in shades of purple and white.

Hot pink florets cover resilient shrubs, that had survived encroaching shade from a cherry tree.

For the summer, the garden emphasis moves to the back yard, where most of the action is in containers. Why? Well first of all, the backyard is undergoing a near total renovation, from the deck to the patios to the pond. And secondly, the furry ones (our labs) firmly believe if something new has been planted, they must remove it from the soil! Neatly, to be sure! So flowers especially are definitely safer in containers.

Except for the blooming succulent, the backyard continues the purple/white/pink color scheme.

The garden's frequent visitor -- who decimated my day lilies!

Thanks for spending time with me in the garden!

    1. Thanks, Kim! Gardens are a work of love. We have an uneasy relationship with that deer and her two friends. I try not to freak out when they eat my day lilies and hostas, and in turn they eat every acorn that falls from the three large oaks!

    1. Thanks, Donna! In some years my front garden is a sea of blues and purples, with the odd white or peach one thrown in.

  10. Sandra, this is so beautiful. The pictures of the flowers are stunning! The purple irises - so pretty, and I love the purple-leaf plant, although I don't recognize it (probably wouldn't grow in Calgary anyway). Just lovely.

    1. Thank you! I think irises are my favorite. I'm not sure what the purple-leaf plant is (my husband was helping me and tossed the tag!), but it was sold as an annual here.

  12. Your garden is beautiful, Sandra! I love the irises in particular, and your colour scheme is right up my street. I did enjoy your comment about the furry ones - isn't it funny how animals love to dig up new plants?!

    1. April, thank you! Such a delightful surprise! I seem to return to this color combo year after year. The furry ones take seriously the notion of retrieve in their names: Labrador Retrievers!
