Leaves of Green — and Gold, Crimson, Rust and Bronze

In the blink of an eye, the page turned to September, a sure sign that autumn is on its way! Though to be frank, autumn approaches leisurely here, not reliably arriving until late October or even early November. But that won't delay me adding fall decor in anticipation of one of my favorite seasons.

I'm delighted that you're joining me today! Rita of the wonderful Panoply blog has brought together fifteen of us to share seasonal tablescapes that are perfect for welcoming fall. I've included all their links at the end of this post. You're sure to be delighted as well with all the wonderful ideas you'll find!

I'm always entranced by the kaleidoscope of colors that autumn brings. Bold designs with deep colors and iconic emblems are exciting to style and experience. But not yet — their time will come. For now I wanted to set a table that whispers "fall", that suggests the sights that are in store for us.

So I've set the table with pretty linens covered in a striking pattern of leaves. I like that they echo the scene outside my windows where nearly all the leaves on the trees are still vibrant in shades of green.  The lone exceptions are the cherry trees whose leaves are turning golden and have begun to litter the mulch below. Gold is often the first of the colors to blaze across the landscape, followed in turn by crimson, rust and bronze.

Gold leaves tinged with bronze are scattered across the linens, reinforced by the golden sheen of the napkin holders. Green leaves cover the candle holders whose shapes remind me of classical columns. The deeper shades of crimson and rust are seen in the patterns of the salad plates that seem to mimic watercolor paintings.

Beneath the salad plates I used our garden-inspired everyday dinner plates on top of woven rattan chargers which repeat the lattice design of the plates. Barely seen in the photo (but more easily viewed in other photos) are the placemats made of faux leaves which ground the plate stack with an organic appearance. Two of the placemats are square and two are circular; both shapes add another layer of texture. Wineglasses in a beautiful shade of green and clear crystal water glasses complete the place setting.

Down the center of the table I scattered faux leaves and stems amid the tall candle holders and shorter amber glass votives, The amber glass adds warmth to the table even without the candles being lit. (As a side note, I realized I had forgotten to add the votive candles about halfway through the photo shoot. You'll see the candles in some of the photos.)

I then added a pair of colorful pheasants in their autumn finery. They are one of several pairs of porcelain birds that often grace my fall tables. Another example are the quail in Fall Beckons

Standing tall is a vase filled with faux leaves and flowers in the colors of fall. I included stems of cotton bolls for visual and textural contrast.

The mid-century vase and the crystal glasses were some of the wonderful finds I came across in The Thrill of Finding Beautiful Glassware. The lime green of the vase adds a visual punch as strong as the orange lantern flowers.

I recently purchased this roughly textured fabric pumpkin adorned with embroidered leaf fronds which suggest ferns or perhaps boxwood stems. Pumpkins are my favorite fall decor item, but rather than bringing out my more colorful collection I chose this one to hint at what's to come. It adds the just the right amount of interest to the coffee and tea service on the buffet.

I like having the wood show under minimal table coverings in the fall.

This photo showcases both the plate stack against the softness of the linens and the related designs of the chargers and the dinner plates.

I love how the sunlight plays on the dining room table in the mornings even though I've set this for dinner.

I've frequently used these candle holders on tables throughout the seasons, such as Summer Flowers, Summer Table, though I haven't recently. I love their intricate figural design.

When guests sit down for dinner, the vase of stems and flowers and the buffet pumpkin will switch places. It will be less dramatic, but more conducive to warm conversations. In the meantime I will enjoy them here on the table.

    1. Thank you, Barbara! It’s sometimes difficult to style fall tablescapes when it’s still very much summer, so I just tried starting with green. I’m glad this resonated with you.

    1. Thanks so much, Linda! The orange just kind of organically flowed onto the tablescape — a happy serendipity. The pumpkin was a truly spur of the moment purchase.

  6. Sandra what a beautiful transition table. You are right we are not quite there yet into the heart of the Fall Season. The subtle greens of your table reinforce the votives and candlesticks with a perfect array of color. I also like the way the light dapples across your table...and the pheasant and quail are reminiscent of my childhood as those birds were always in the Milo Fields in the Fall. Great job as usual. Happy September...it will soon be Christmas before we know it. 🥴🥴🐿️🍁🍂

    1. Thank you, Kari! Oh I would love to see pheasants and quail in the fields. This time of year I see lots of deer and hawks and owls though. I love setting tables with color and can’t wait until the trees are ablaze with it.

  7. I love leaves, and your leaf theme is perfect for fall. Your pumpkin even has leaves on it, and it's so cute! I also like how your plates have different types of leaves on each one. But my favorite thing are the gorgeous table linens. I have a table linen obsession for sure *giggles* and I always appreciate unique and pretty table linens. Also....being an Alabamian, I noticed the cotton in your centerpiece, and it's perfect for autumn!

    1. Thank you, Ricki! As a Georgia neighbor (though a transplant) I have to include cotton bolls occasionally as a nod to my husband’s roots. Plus they add such interesting texture. I seem to be easily smitten by table linens too, even more than dishware! These may become my go to for fall. Hope you have a wonderful fall season!

    1. Thanks, Ann! I snapped up those candle holders as fast as I could at the consignment shop several years ago and have used them lots and lots since. The pumpkin was an unintended score as well. Luck was with me!

  9. This is so pretty Sandra, I love the linens you used with the gold and green leaves~a perfect transition from summer to Fall! I love the pheasants too, beautiful~ As as Southerner I appreciate the cotton bolls in your flower arrangement, as Fall means "High Cotton," harvest time in the South :) Love your embroidered pumpkin!

    1. Thank you, Jenna! I enjoy fall’s slow arrival and I had to include the cotton bolls as a nod to my husband’s Southern roots — his family arrived in GA in 1789.

  10. Sandra, what a lovely table you have created in beautiful shades of green with just that pop of autumn reds and oranges. the pheasants are a beautiful addition to the table and remind me of the pheasants my cousins used to raise in rural Ontario. Having the wood show through between your settings and runner reminds me of the trees and their beautiful changing colors. I'm a big collector of crystal glassware and really appreciate the pieces from your own collection that you included on the table. Have a lovely autumn.

  12. Sandra, your "whispering" fall table is lovely! The green and gold leaves are perfect for transitioning to fall. I love all the textures in the place settings and those salad plates are so pretty. The glassware is stunning, as always, as is the center vase - love that shade of green and love the touch of orange in the flowers. Your feathered friends are a delightful touch and the new crewel leaf pumpkin is precious. Love the warm touches of amber in the votive holders. I hope you get to dine at your lovely table and wishing you a very happy Autumn.

    1. Thanks so much, Kim! I do love the salad plates but only bought four of them; when I went back for more they were sold out. Just my luck, sigh. The lime green vase turned out to be the perfect color!

  13. Spoken like a true gardener, you describe the process of a slow start to fall while summer lets go. I love the color choices you're using for this tablescape, Sandra. The leaves on the runner and napkins truly reflect what I'm seeing right now, plants reflecting signs of less daylight and loss of chlorophyll. The salad plates are just right, as I'm seeing leaves beginning to fall from my neighbor's oak tree and onto my lawn. Beautiful candlesticks and pheasants and quail. Your collection of glassware is unstoppable, just lovely. Thank you for bringing your real life perspective to this welcoming fall tablescape hop! Happy September!

    1. Thanks so much, Rita! Once I selected the linens they were a sort of guidepost for how the table should evolve. Now we’re back in the summer side of the transition, but soon. . . . Thank you for arranging such a wonderful blog hop. I hope you have a fabulous fall season.

  14. Sandra, I love how you followed Mother Nature’s cue to create a table that whispers fall. Our weather is similar to yours in that it’s typically late October before fall color arrives bringing sweater weather. I love all the shades of green at your table and I love your handsome pheasant pair that marry the browns and greens of your rattan chargers layered on your leaf placemats. Wishing you a beautiful autumn season and Happy September! 🍂🧡
