Wreaths and trees have been put up and decorated in holiday themes. Packages have been been wrapped and tied up with pretty ribbons. Menus have been decided upon and china and glassware chosen for the festive meals. All that's left to be done is to set the table! Whether much-loved dishes and glasses will be used or new ones delightedly chosen, your holiday table will need a focal point — a centerpiece! But how do you design a centerpiece? You can use the centerpiece you've used every year, or you can create something that's new and fabulous! I've gathered examples to show you how to style one for your table, using what you already have.
Flowers and Garden Greenery
For A Merry Plaid Christmas I filled two cachepots with cryptomeria and Leyland cypress cuttings from my yard and topped them with faux amaryllis flowers in
vibrant red. Of course real amaryllis are even more stunning and you can sometimes find them in bloom at local garden centers or grocery stores.
Setting the table for lunch in Christmastime Accented with Red, I used white-tipped pine cones and brightly colored faux berries placed in a vintage hammered aluminum bowl. The bowl was then surrounded by flocked bottle brush trees.
Christmas Cactus and Holiday Candles
For an unusual twist on holiday greenery in A Christmas Table That's Casually Festive, I chose a Christmas cactus which was beginning to bloom in red. Next to the cactus are festive peppermint-striped candles that I've had for years — and never burn because I love their stacked layers and whimsical look.
Nutcrackers
Several nutcrackers were a natural choice to complement the china pattern in Christmas Grenadiers. They strutted proudly down the center on a pathway of natural elements, some real, some faux.
Leaf Garland and Berries
For the simplified table in Christmas in Red and Gold, a soft linen runner was chosen as a base for a magnolia leaf garland in a lovely golden color with sprays of berries tucked here and there. Hurricanes filled with small colorfully patterned ornaments were added to complete a festive centerpiece
Regal Wildlife
In Christmas Dining — The New Traditional I mixed finishes
and design periods, starting with a gorgeous hand-woven tapestry runner, topped by faux evergreens, patterned ornaments and a
golden pheasant nestled within.
Reindeer
Frolicking in the center of the Casually Festive Holiday Table are a pair of exquisitely detailed reindeer flanked by two sets of adorable salt and pepper shakers. Simple — but stunning.
Flowers in a Crystal Vase
One of the classic elements in Cozy, Bright and Classic — A Holiday Table is an elegant crystal vase of red amaryllis, white chrysanthemums and pine and magnolia greenery. An arrangement such as this is always a beautiful focal point on a table, but how often do you style one for the holidays?Santa
Dreaming of a White (and Blue) Christmas featured a dramatic Santa and two of his reindeer dressed in navy blue on a table sprinkled with snow. They're equally detailed on all sides so that everyone has a lovely view.
Decorated Lantern
Lanterns offer a traditional welcome with the glow of candlelight. Done in a black matte finish, this lantern with bold lines filled and surrounded by winter botanicals makes a striking centerpiece that complements the Plaid Patterns for a Warm and Cozy Christmas Table.
Now it's time to create a centerpiece for your holiday table! I hope you'll be inspired by these to try different styles for fabulous focal pieces now and throughout the new year!
