Easing Into Fall

September signals that fall is approaching, although we'll still have summer weather here during October. So I decided to start easing into fall with warm vibrant colors for a stunning tablescape!

Today I'm happily joining a group who are sharing their fall tablescapes. We're hosted by Rita from Panoply, and all the tables are linked at the bottom of this post. When you've finished here you'll want to check out their creative ideas!

I began with a new blue and white tablecloth. Blue and white is a timeless combination that lends itself to a wide range of table styles. I love the bold block-printed design and the contrasting band around the edge.

Copper punctuates the blue and white and brings the warmth of fall to the table. Metallic copper shines in the chargers, pitcher and napkin rings. I received the chargers as a gift from my daughter and I've been waiting for fall tables to use them. Navy blue napkins emphasize the darkest part of the blue spectrum and feel perfect for a fall table.

A different shade of blue is found in the glass vase with touches of white. Copper makes another appearance in the tall tapers in the candlesticks. I love the contrast of the delicately cut crystal candlesticks against the chunky glass vase.

In the centerpiece white mums are accented by coppery orange beefy pods and dainty flowers.

Realistic? Realistically faux!

The place settings begin with metal chargers, topped by vintage blue and white dinner plates and soup bowls perfect for heartier fall meals.

The center of the dishes' traditional design is similar to blue onion patterns, but they have a different rim design and lack the inner decorative band. I've collected various pieces of the china from antique malls and online sources for several years. You can see another tablescape styled with this pattern here.

Peeking beyond the flowers you can see that the buffet continues the theme of blue and white interspersed with copper.

The burnished copper bowl is set on a riser (otherwise known as books!), and holds the only standard acknowledgment of fall — a tiny white pumpkin. The same type of florals found on the table also grace the center, placed on matching napkins and a differently patterned tea towel.

To the left is a wonderfully portly soup tureen, with graceful handles and a delightful twist knob. I was lucky to find a silver ladle that fits the tureen just right. The ladle doesn't slide into it, nor does it tip over to the outside.

On the right is one of a pair of covered vegetable bowls found at a consignment store. Unfortunately I can't decipher the faded hallmark on the bottom.

The pattern is in the Imari style, with intricate botanicals in various blues and oranges. Gold traces the handle, the decorative bands and the rim on both the lid and the bowl. The center of the bowl repeats the pattern on the top of the lid.

Colors are saturated, foretelling the colors that will soon fill the fall garden.

The warmth of the deeper colors and the shine of the metallics are irresistibly linked to the feeling of fall in the air.

I'm not yet ready for the profusion of pumpkins, nor the deeper shades of oranges, rusts, crimsons and burgundies. But I am all for easing into fall!

I would like to thank Rita from Panoply for organizing this fall tablescape celebration. I hope that you'll visit each of my fellow stylists — you are sure to be inspired!

    1. Thanks, Chloe! I think blue and orange has a rather jaunty air, with the orange energy contrasting the blue's calm. I couldn't pass up the vegetable server!

  4. Let's hear it for realistic looking florals! Blue/White/Copper; great color trio for this time of year. Extending the theme to the buffet was a great way to keep everything harmonious. I love the covered vegetable bowl and I will be on the hunt for a few of them. Beautiful!

    1. Thanks, Sandra! Although I love fresh flowers, my garden's in a bit of a rough state at the moment. Silk flowers are more dependable! And they can be found in so many varieties.

  5. You are so right about blue and white being timeless. The gleam of the warm copper accents transport it right into fall. Your soup tureen is a beauty! What a pleasure to ladle soup from it and I love your Imari-style tureen too. So happy to join you at the table and hop with you, Happy September!

  12. Sandra, imagine my surprise with your 'easing into Fall' title as I have been using that 'ease into Fall' comment in a few of my comments to our table stylists today. I LOVE your table and I especially love your copper pitcher and chargers...be still my heart. I have had copper pots and pans for years and I only display them as I want them to stay pretty. How silly am I?

    1. Thanks, Kari! I suppose easing into fall comes readily to mind living here in North Georgia. Summer lasts a long time to fade into summer, unlike other states where crisp air comes with the calendar. I haven't had much copper so I'm not sure how much care these will need. But I do use the silver pieces I have.

  14. Sandra, thank you for bringing your taste of early fall to our blog hop! I love when stylists share their sources and thinking behind their designs. Your blue & white is classic, just as Linda's black & white is. You've got me inspired to use ones I previously had on a summer table, but with the twist of copper, it totally works for fall! Lol, the creative secret use of books as riser is one not all stylists would share, and I love your candid approach to that and the fantastically faux florals. Thanks for sharing it all today. It's classic.

    1. Thank you, Rita, for your generous comments! I love styling tables and find it endlessly fascinating to use the same things over and over but create something new. (Admittedly I've got a lot of dishes to work with, lol.) I don't think it should be intimidating and I always hope that the hows, whys and details will encourage someone to give it a try. Thanks for including me in the hop -- I've really enjoyed it!

The blue and white tablecloth is timeless and makes the perfect base for your vintage blue and white dishes. The tureen is gorgeous, and I love the copper accents, too. Again, glad to have you here :) Pinned!

  16. Sandra, blue is definitely the perfect neutral for transitioning slowly into the autumn season! I love how you have paired it with the cooper to bring that layer of warmth and a nod to the colours of the season! Your centerpiece is lovely, and wouldn't have guessed it was faux!! The soup tureen is gorgeous and reminds me how much I want to have one myself! We serve A LOT of soup in the cold winter months!!

    1. Thank you, Maureen, for your lovely comments! There's something special about serving soup in tureens. The anticipation, the steam rising as you take off the lid, a pretty ladle. The reaction of my adult nephew was priceless -- he had never seen soup served that way and was transfixed, lol.
