Acorns and Flowers

According to the calendar, autumn is in full swing. It's not so evident in the northern part of Georgia. As you've seen in  October Garden Flowers, summer annuals are still blooming strong but the first of my camellias has flowered. And today the trees have begun to turn golden, while the dogwoods have taken on a red cast.

To celebrate the seasonal transition, I set a table that showcases the last of summer's wildflowers and the reign of fall's chrysanthemums.

I started with a set of pretty table linens that my daughter had given me. I like the wildflowers scattered with abandon on a pale cream background, softer than white would have been. Their muted colors are much more fall than summer and reflect the exuberance found in my garden.

I found a mixed bouquet at the grocery that made the perfect centerpiece!

On dinner plates with a blue garden trellis pattern I placed dramatic salad plates that have autumn flowers painted in an Old Masters style. They're an interesting juxtaposition with the watercolor designs of the linens, but I think the pairing works.

 

I've used the dinner plates in all four seasons — summer, spring and winter and now fall. They're a versatile base for many patterns of salad plates and bowls or when used on their own.

Scattered on the table runner to either side of the flowers are an assortment of acorns and coppery wired balls. They're in iconic fall colors and call to mind the thousands of acorns dropping everywhere in our yard.

The flowers opened fully after I got them home. I took the photos when they were in their peak condition, despite the fact that skies outside were overcast.

The salad plates come in four designs, all on the deepest of blacks.

Besides flowers, other botanicals found this time of year are included.

The colors are bold and vibrant! I would find it difficult to pick a favorite.

 

Sorry for the glare! With such gloomy skies I was forced to turn on the overhead chandelier.

My current obsession is salt and pepper shakers. I found these online about a month ago with a charming underplate; they would be a good addition to any fall table.

Despite the gray skies (or because of them!) the deep tones of the flowers are mesmerizing.

More fall tones are found in the copper napkin rings and the amber glassware etched with flowers.

Wildflowers are in teals, oranges and ambers. 

The Depression glassware has an iridescent quality that I find particularly appealing.

I've really enjoyed this table for the past few days!
