Tablesetting with Poppy and Cobalt

Last week I had fun while waiting for an HVAC contractor at daughter J's place. Miss J and her roommate both had full class schedules that day, so I went to Dahlonega on a gorgeous early September day. She graciously said I could play with a table setting while I waited.

When we were shopping for things for her townhouse, she gravitated towards French Country design, shown by these expertly painted and distressed table and chairs. Together with an additional two chairs and a table leaf, they came to about $300 at the vintage store. The newly replaced seat coverings were perfect for J.

The room is painted a lovely sherbet color, complemented by her favorite flowers: sunflowers.

So naturally, sunflowers are the centerpiece of her table.

Daughter J selected Fiestaware in bold Poppy and Cobalt for her dishes. She received several place settings as Christmas and birthday gifts and can now set a pretty table for eight, although I've only done a table for four here.

I love the way the two colors work together.

Under the stack I used square placemats and napkins in a vibrant print whose colors match the dishes almost perfectly. They were found by serendipity last year; I don't recall who the linens are made by.

Her flatware is a stainless set inherited from my parents. By coincidence, it too has a French country feel.

J splurged on a set of stemless wine glasses from Crate and Barrel that go well with the glasses we had gotten for a party years ago.

There's always a lot of light streaming in through the French doors.

They have a great view out the doors!

It's a lovely place to call home.

Altogether a fun way to spend a morning!

  2. Sunflowers are the best aren't they! You created a wonderful tablescape with her dishes and made good use of your time while waiting. I'm impressed with the well manicured gardens in her view!

    1. Thanks, Liz! She lives in a quiet little development, not far from school, with a great common area seen from her deck. Her neighbor is quite the gardener and has a huge assortment of flowers and shrubs.

    1. Thanks so much, Christine, for the comments and the fabulous party! It's been fun watching my daughter take an interest in design. She also picked the paint color. Not the typical college pad!

  5. I LOVE this color combination. I think it has become more and more popular over the years. I am attempting to change up my lanai from summer to fall. With a Talavera rug in cobalt, lime green, and orange, it has been a bit of a challenge. Great post!

    1. Thanks so much! Isn't it amazing that you find the best things when you're not looking for them? I literally stumbled on the linens in the store when I was looking for something totally unrelated to tablescaping!
