Through the Glass, Darkly

My family and I spent last Saturday night at the Atlanta Botanical Garden experiencing the glass works of Dale Chihuly, a master of glass and neon sculptures.  You first encounter his breathtaking "chandelier" entering the Visitor Center.

His work was installed in 20 sites throughout the Garden, which covers 30 acres adjacent to Piedmont Park in the heart of Atlanta. Although most are part of the temporary exhibition, several are permanent additions to the Garden. These photos were taken on my phone.

It had been several years since I had visited the Garden, and had never before been there at night. The exhibition was a revelation.

Actual fall weather had come to Atlanta! The temps were in the 70's, dropping with the sun.  There was a constant gentle breeze, so welcome after our sweltering summer.

There were path lights, moonlight and the lights within the glassworks to guide us through the garden.

In the photo above, you can see the scale of the installations in comparison with the people in the background.  (I didn't artistically enlarge the sculpture in the foreground.)

Several works were installed next to or within the Garden's water features:

The effects of the huge trees swaying in the breeze, the moonlight and the glassworks was absolutely magical!

One you walked under...

One you viewed from above on the Canopy Walk...

Each one was spectacular! I hope that you enjoyed these photos if you don't get a chance to see the exhibition in person.

  3. Sandra, I had planned to visit Atlanta to see Chihuly's work! I wish I had made it over to check it out. Last year, I visited Seattle and went to Chihuly's museum and gardens. It was stunning! Thank for sharing at Gardens Galore!

    1. I was amazed how organic the glass sculptures looked, and how easily they fit into the garden! I didn't know there was a museum and gardens dedicated to his work. Definitely worth checking out - thanks for the info, Pam.
