Styling a Simply Classic Thanksgiving Table

November came boldly, with a sudden embrace of actual fall temperatures and fleeting gusts of wind that sent leaves of all colors tumbling to earth. And now we're a few short weeks from my favorite of all holidays — Thanksgiving! A holiday devoted to family, friends, feasts and a weekend of entertaining.

If you're hosting, have you planned your holiday table? If not, well, you're in luck — for today I'm participating in a fabulous blog hop focused on styling Thanksgiving tablescapes! The amazing Rita of the Panoply blog has gathered fourteen of us to share our Thanksgiving ideas with you. I'm including all the details for the hop at the bottom of this post.

I set a classic table simply inspired by all the gorgeous colors appearing this month!

I started with these beautifully detailed plates that combine the realism of photography and the emotional impact of paintings.

Each plate features different autumn flowers surrounded by various leaves, fruits and berries.

I love how intensely their colors are depicted!

The last one is centered on a sunflower.

In echoes of the plates, sunflowers, dahlias, autumn-colored leaves and cotton bolls are gathered in a beautiful crystal vase that I bought on a whim simply because I loved it.

For a foundation I chose a tablecloth with muted amber flowers and leaves in a sage hue that suggests fall.

A three-dimensional scalloped edge brings interest to white dinner plates that contrast with the bold black background of the salad plates. Cross-hatched glass chargers in a lovely shade of green are an unexpected addition to the stack but nod to the botanical theme of the table. The rope edging on the flatware adds a third type of textural appeal.

I've set the table for four, but I've still varied the details at each setting. Besides four different designs for the plates, I've styled the napkins two ways, both using patterned napkins that match the tablecloth and solid ones that (totally unexpectedly!) picked up one of the shades perfectly.

I've chosen lovely wine and champagne glasses with elegant black stems to coordinate with the salad plates. Using them here proves their versatility since they were most recently a part of There's a Full Moon Rising. Black also accents these fantastic vintage mid-century collins glasses used for water. They've also appeared in Setting a Spring Table for Lunch.

Gathered around the vase in the center of the table are iconic symbols of fall: acorns, pumpkins and woven rattan balls. Also in the center are two sets of salt and pepper containers. These shakers are simple ceramic cylinders that match the salad plates.

And these are amazing pewter cellars that were crafted by the artisan to resemble a ginkgo leaf and a pomegranate. Both included spoons that look like twigs.

I love the vibrant reds in the centerpiece! They blend beautifully with the gold and orange velvet pumpkins and sit compatibly with the reddish berries and brown tones of the rattan balls and acorns.

Buffets or sideboards offer a decorative platform for gathering items related to your tablescape. They can also have a practical use for staging courses for your meal, but more often than not I enjoy displaying seasonal decor as I have done here. Pumpkins, acorns and berries are repeated from the centerpiece. A classic turkey dressed in harvest fruits and vegetables unmistakably says "Thanksgiving", and is joined by a similarly clad quail teapot, sugar and creamer.

This photo shows the interplay between the buffet and the table.

I would like to thank Rita from Panoply for organizing this Thanksgiving tablescape celebration. I hope that you'll visit each of my fellow stylists — you are sure to be inspired by their creative ideas!

  1. Sandra, What a beautiful table! I love the dramatic contrast of the seasonal flowers against the dark background of your plates--gorgeous! We have also been enjoying fall-ish weather and it is such a welcome change. Happy November!

  2. Wowza! Those plates are wonderful! I love that you went for a lot of color. I did the same this year. I think the reason why I like a Thanksgiving table that is so full of color is because it’s followed by winter that is so drab. Everything here looks so beautiful and inviting.

  3. Those beautiful plates set the scene for a lovely table, Sandra. The saturated colors stand out so well against that deep black background. So nice that you can use the black stemware for a touch of elegance in many settings. It goes well here. Loved seeing your buffet behind the table and all your Thanksgiving treasures. Wising you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Sandra, this is lovely! I'm not hosting Thanksgiving this year, but I set my table for my cousin and her friends this week to celebrate her birthday. It was a fun time.
I love the beautiful dishes with autumn flowers. This is my favorite season too. Your linens and the flowers are perfect for the season. In love with the pewter cellars. I have a few pewter pieces with autumn leaves and acorns. It's fun to find these little details to add to our tables. Happy Thanksgiving.!

  5. Goodness, your table is so pretty. First of all....I agree that the red in your centerpiece is so pretty. I love vibrant reds! Speaking of vibrant....the plates are works of art. I love the fall foliage, and how each one is different! I love sunflowers and mums this time of year, and the black background makes the art pop. I also think the pewter salt cellars are so cute, and also works of art. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving! :D
