"Summertime . . . an' the livin' is easy"
composed by George Gershwin, lyrics by DuBose Heyward
And nothing says easier living than a picnic in the open air, with simple foods, good wine and great friends!
Welcome to the summer edition of the Four Seasons Interior Design blog hop. I’m
joining a group of talented designers, headed by MaryJo of Master”pieces” of my Life and Susan of From the Bay to the Beach, who are bringing you all types of summer inspiration. The previews and links for each designer's fabulous ideas are listed near the end of the post.
Just because picnics are held outdoors, doesn't mean you can't style a wonderful tablescape — whether on an actual table or on a blanket spread on the grass.
I've chosen to hold our picnic on the large fire pit table that is on the lower patio. At chat table height, it has a matching metal lid that is usually placed over the burner, converting the fire pit into a standard flat surface that seats four to six. We have four comfortable lounge chairs around it.
From the table, you have a good view of most of the backyard, including the stream that winds down the hill and into the koi pond. A pretty metal bridge spans the upper reaches of the stream. You can read all about the recent renovation of the backyard and the making of the stream and pond in Backyard Renovation Reveal.
Now for the picnic! We received this spacious wicker picnic basket as a young couple. It holds just about all you might need for a picnic — plates, glasses, flatware, napkins, sandwiches, salads, fruit, snacks, I could go on! It does not contain a cooler though.
For plates I chose these cute melamine salad plates that feature colorful fish swimming amidst ocean plants. I placed them on coordinating dinner plates that are covered in delightfully patterned fish of several sizes. This is the first chance I've had to use them since their end-of-season sale last year.
The base for the plates are paired placemats in deep blue and bold turquoise. I think they echo the colors of gorgeous tropical seas.
These plates are the perfect choice for a picnic next to the koi pond!
The small fence is to keep Finn the Mischief Maker out of the pond. But he has unfettered access to the stream and thoroughly enjoys dashing up and down through the water!
The koi have gotten quite large the last two years. Some of the smaller fish are baby koi (fingerlings), some are Comet goldfish.
For the wine I've selected acrylic stemware with lovely ombré colors that transition from green to turquoise. The glasses have a sturdy stem and base, and a large enough bowl that can also accommodate lemonade or iced tea. I've had them for years and don't recall their manufacturer. Turquoise napkins with fringe and azure-handled stainless flatware continue the water theme and add a fun touch to the place settings.
You can certainly use paper plates and napkins with disposable drinking cups and utensils for an enjoyable picnic. Especially if you're lugging the basket with all of the necessities, food and drinks down a trail or to a picnic bench in a park! But when you can, prettier tableware that's made of sturdier materials will elevate your picnic experience and make it more memorable.
On the far side of the pond, heucheras and ferns join a weeping Japanese maple.
I loved these hand-crafted wooden boards the minute I saw them at an artisan's market! They nestle together when you need a large surface; separately they create an interesting design and can support various types of food containers.
Wooden boards are the perfect choice for a setting under the trees. And these blend well with the wicker in the basket.
I couldn't resist posing the metal koi watching their counterparts!
One of the reasons I love staging a picnic here is that is nearly always shady under the trees from spring through fall. Birdsong regularly fills the trees and the sound of the waterfalls in the stream is melodic. We often spend mornings and afternoons in the comfy chairs or on the swing that hangs from the pergola.
On the other side of the patio are the steps and low walls that lead first to the middle patio, then to the upper one. A red-leaved Japanese maple covers the corner, surrounded by creeping jenny and ferns.
And now I want to introduce you to the creative talents behind the Four Seasons Interior Design group, summer collection! I'm sure you'll find ideas to craft your summer designs.

I absolutely love your picnic setting Sandra. Love the stream and the bridge. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. And the Koi are amazing. Of course the tablescape is wonderful as all of yours always are. Thank you for sharing with us today. XO- MJ
ReplyDeleteThank you, MaryJo! I find it's a great place to relax and let my mind wander. Good food/snacks and cool drinks just top it off.
DeleteYou have such a beautiful yard and the Koi are incredible! I love the pops of blue on your gorgeous tablescape!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kristin! I'm pleased with the way it's coming along each season.
DeleteWhat a lovely summer tablescape Sandra. All of the different shades of blue look lovely together. I am so jealous of your water feature! I have always wanted a koi pond. Thanks for being part of the hop today! ~ Susan
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan! I can't resist blues on tables, even outside lol. We really like how the pond turned out in the renovation. The koi are much happier since we gave them a deeper pond
DeleteI know you must be looking forward to summer and spending lots of time in your amazing back yard! What a perfect place for a picnic! I adore your basket and those dishes are so cute and wonderful for outdoor use! Thanks for all the great tips, now I'm excited to go on a picnic!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I can spend hours there before I even know it. Picnics are an added bonus. Hope you enjoy several in the coming months. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteYour back yard is lovely and looks so relaxing. Having a picnic in this gorgeous space under shady trees is a wonderful idea. Love the blues you used in the picnic setting. Your basket is lovely and even better since you've had it so long and have been using it.
ReplyDeleteLynne, Thrifting Wonderland
Thank you, Lynne! I so enjoy spending lazy afternoons and evenings out there, watching the fish, listening to the birds and the toad that has taken up residence. I'm surprised the basket has held up so well, though it's a bit worn. Have a fabulous holiday weekend!
DeleteSandra, your picnic table under the shade trees is so pretty - love all the blues! And the fish plates are perfect for sitting beside the koi pond. Your yard is lovely and it must be so relaxing to sit out there with all the wonderful sights and sounds. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kim! The colorful blues and plates add such a pretty touch in a yard filled mostly with greens and browns.
DeleteSandra what a lovely back yard you have made. The koi are always fascinating to watch...which reminds me of a fun story right after we moved to Florida and filled our waterfall feature with small koi. They were here and then they weren't. Over a few days, the fish became food for other predators. I replaced them for a while, but then surrendered to the elements of herons, egrets, ospreys, anhingas, raccoons, snapping turtles and hopefully NOT large snakes. LOL Seriously the blue heron, which I love, can empty a koi pond in a matter of hours here in SW Florida. I love picnics and the Captain and I take advantage of Gulf breezes to grab a picnic basket (I have 8 or 9) and find a beach OR we have a picnic in our courtyard and/or Secret Garden. I love your choices of dishware and round placemats...perfect coastal colors. Have a great Holiday.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kari! Oh my, you had your hands full! The first pond we had was closer to the house in what was then a sunny spot. It was long but only about 26 inches deep. We were regularly “shopped” by a blue heron but local hawks kept most of the other critters away. The problem was more that our first Labrador retriever thought it was his job to keep the pond clear — of leaves, sticks, 50-pound submerged pots of water lilies and papyrus. He didn’t bother the koi but they steered clear of him. When we renovated the back yard we relocated the pond and dug it 40 inches deep and placed ceramic tunnels in the water for fish shelter. It has worked out much better to our relief. Hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend!
DeleteThat is such a pretty spot for a picnic! Your tablescape is just lovely too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joanne! We love spending time there.
DeleteYou have created an oasis :) Featuring you at Wednesdays in the Studio!
ReplyDeleteJennifer, what a lovely image! Thank you!
DeleteSo nice to see all the photos! And the big orange fish... wow. Now that I’ve finished reading your blog, I keep thinking about those glasses. I loved them — and also the wooden cutting boards. The whole post had such a beautiful, inviting atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteI came across your blog through the NL Link Party, where you can also find my blog somewhere among the other links. :-)
Thank you, Aritha! I'm so glad my backyard picnic resonated with you. The wooden cutting boards exhibit such creative craftmanship -- I wish I could have bought more of his wares.
DeleteWe love to go on picnics but I never think to set one up in the backyard. You have inspired me! Thanks for sharing great ideas and suggestions. And I'm in love with the fish! Thanks for a great post.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Missy! Picnics have an easy naturalness that can be enjoyed in unexpected places without too much effort.
