A Cozy Plaid Setting for Fall

Cooler temps really call out for plaid! Inspired by the crisp mornings we've had all week, I decided on a cozy table grounded on a plaid table cover. It combines the colors I've been attracted to all season, this time in shades of burnt orange and slate blue.

The mix of colors in the table cover will go with a number of fall dishes and decor. Today I've chosen dark orange earthenware plates and vintage blue salad plates with a trellis pattern. They're topped by bright orange leaves whose undersides are coated with glitter.

In the center I've re-used the arrangement I created for Easing Into Fall, substituting a copper pitcher for the glass vase. I love its hammered texture and the bright shine it has managed to retain. Behind it I used a twining garland with gold and red leaves. The garland is airy, but it takes up visual space where two other place settings would generally be.

Playing off the copper pitcher is a cast iron acorn with a verdigris patina, discovered in a crowded antique booth.

Vintage amber glass tumblers join iced tea glasses with sapphire bases.

I've set the table in the breakfast room, located between the kitchen and family room, steps away from both the deck and dining room. Through the windows you can see that the leaves on the trees are still green.

Salt and pepper shakers decked out in their autumn finery strut down the table.

More variations in copper are found in the hand-crafted napkin rings. The artist used the chemistry of acids and nutrients naturally occurring in fresh leaves to botanically etch the copper during a weeks-long process. The resulting color patterns and textures of each ring are unique. They often appear on my fall tables — you can see them again in Understated Pumpkins.

I love using painstakingly-created art like this in tablescapes. It adds beauty to form and function.

The napkins had been bought on sale but never used. Their color blends well with the blues on the table.

Textural coppers and blues atop a fringed plaid cloth together create a cozy setting for informal breakfasts and lunches throughout fall!

Hope you're enjoying a beautiful fall day!

    1. Thanks so much, Jenna! It seems everything copper is catching my eye, though everything except the leaves on the plates were found in my house. I didn't realize how many copper pieces I had! The ducks are so darn cute aren't they?

    1. Thank you, Pam! Copper is the perfect metal for fall, though pewter comes in a close second. I think it's the warmth they convey. I wish the artist still made table items -- on her site there seems to be more conventional art pieces.

  5. Hi. I love the tablescape. I was wondering about that beautiful glass leaf on the plate. I was wondering where you purchased that, it's a beautiful touch.

    1. Thanks, Cindy, for your sweet comments. Giving away my secrets -- the leaves are light-weight resin (I think)and are being sold as ornaments. I believe they're a bit large for that purpose. Found at Hobby Lobby.

    1. Thank you, Elizabeth! I found the acorn several weeks ago in a booth at an antique mall. It is a doorknocker, and has no identifying marks on it.
