A Simple Vignette on a Day for Remembering

We've always been rather low-key on Memorial Day, celebrating quietly, usually only with the three of us. This year there will only be Greg and I, but I wanted to acknowledge the holiday in some way.

I gathered a few elements that came together in a simple vignette that seemed fitting on a day for remembering.

For my friends overseas, Memorial Day is a holiday that honors the men and women who died while serving in the military. It is observed on the last Monday of May.

After the Civil War, which claimed more American lives than any other (including those in the 20th century), cities and towns in the late 1860's had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers. The tradition continued across the country until Memorial Day became a national holiday in 1971.

Uncle Sam stands quietly by flowers laid on the island in tribute.

Red, white and blue star votives will flicker with candlelight as the sun sets.

Next Monday many of us will be visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.

And if you will be spending a quiet day at home, take a moment to remember those who have made it possible.
