Pumpkins and Flowers — A Fall Tablesetting

After a long time coming, I'm enjoying everything about fall — the crisp cool mornings followed by warm afternoons, the beautiful color display outside my windows and on leisurely drives, and the exchanging of invitations for cozy lunches.

Today I'm sharing a table for four that I've set for lunch. As the season becomes busier, taking time out for the hearty foods of autumn in the company of friends and family is something to look forward to. 

  

An abundance of flowers amid a jumble of pumpkins sets the scene, for what says autumn more than that combination?

   

Tables have different beginnings. Some begin with interesting dishes or lovely crystal. Others begin with the fabulous world of tablecloths, placemats and napkins. Still others begin with traditional or holiday specific props. This table began with the centerpiece.

An overflowing collection of flowers, grasses and leaves was placed in a copper pitcher on a magnolia placemat. Pumpkins, acorns and grapevine balls were gathered around the "vase".

  

 A pair of salt and pepper shakers in the guise of woodland ducks have joined in.

I like the feel of abundance and the wonderful color combinations!

   

I've used pumpkins in a variety of textures— glass, velvet, foam and resin.

     

The porcelain ducks sport leaves, berries and acorns in a riot of colors.

    

Copper-colored placemats provide the base for woven rattan chargers and two patterns of dishes. Vintage dinner plates edged with a scrolling design in shades of brown and turquoise are topped by wonderfully detailed salad plates depicting autumn botanicals on a black background. You've seen the dinner plates in A French Inspired Tablescape, and the salad plates in Acorns and Flowers. The scrolls on the dinner plates are echoed in the gold and black swirls of the vintage glassware.

The strong lines of the flatware are balanced by the organic pattern of the napkins and the marbled look of the copper rings, made by a talented artist in a multi-step process. They were also used in Understated Pumpkins.

  

I was pleased that I caught the rays of mid-afternoon sunshine.

I love the complex mix of textures — rough, smooth, fabric, porcelain, botanical, linear.

A closer look at the vintage glasses, alongside simply designed modern stems. 

   

In the background is the buffet/sideboard, outfitted with another vase of flowers, a wicker pumpkin and raffia birds. I like fall's abundance to overflow from the table!

    

Rather than repeat the theme of pumpkins on the napkins, I chose a set that has interesting colors that aren't in the other table items. Yet they're compatible. I've used them more often than I would have guessed when I bought them some time ago.

   

 I love the hammered finish on the pitcher!

 

   

   

The plates remind me of the style of  Old Master paintings with their naturalistic depictions in warm colors.

I love the centerpiece lit by the sun!
