A Modern Take on a Traditional Pattern for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday where the table really takes center place. Tradition often guides the selection of table linens, dishes and glassware as well as the recipes that are made and loved year after year. I'd like to show you a way of using traditional tableware as a starting point for a lovely table with modern touches that is both welcoming and festive.

I'm happy to be joining a group of stylists who have wonderful ideas to set special Thanksgiving tables! Our blog hop was organized by Rita of Panoply and you'll find links to all the creative tables at the end of this post.

I started with china, crystal and silverware that we received as wedding gifts. The patterns are timeless. The china has a rim of mottled blue edged with a band of golden leaves. The silverware has graceful lines with few embellishments. The crystal, shown in photos below, is cut with similarly graceful lines and rimmed in gold. The plates are set upon gold chargers that have swirls of color that mimic brush strokes and raised beads along the edge.

The runner that spans the length of the table is new; it's a textile interpretation of wallpaper designed by William Morris in the 1890's, a perfect choice for a table based in tradition.

Napkins in shades of blue are doubled, and clasped with gold napkin rings in a leaf design. I bought these when Greg and I hosted our very first dinner. Unfortunately I've only got six left.

Joining the crystal are glass goblets in a green that reminds me of the leaves in my garden — and repeats the greens in the runner.

On the runner I gathered a collection of pumpkins in velvet, joined by tiny glittered pumpkins that brought bright color to the center for a modern touch. Also in seasonal colors are faux berries in the centerpiece and in warm amber votives that I used on the table last week in Setting the Table with Art.

   .
I added an antique salt cellar with lion heads and feet that's fitted with its original cobalt blue glass insert. For a while I collected salt cellars that add bygone elegance to the table (and show off the pretty colors of artisanal salts). Finding very small spoons that will stay within the salt cellars without tipping over has proven to be an unexpected challenge. I could of course just lay the spoons on the side, but what's the fun in that?

In the fall and winter I find candlelight (and candle holders) irresistible. We'll have an afternoon dinner, so it may be dark enough to be able to enjoy the candles. In any case I've used two pairs of contemporary crystal candlesticks and one pair that's ceramic. Staggering candle holders down the table is a very modern way to style them, compared to using traditional candelabra with multiple arms. The ceramic candlesticks are new production using the historical mold that was originally designed in 1920 by Rookwood Pottery. They were a wonderful gift from my sister!

I love the deep oranges, reds and rusts against the cool blues and greens. I think that contrast helps to make the tablescape dynamic.

On the buffet pumpkins, berries and flowers in fall colors are arranged on a silver tray, shown in more detail in An Autumn Tray. Be sure to visit that post to see the special additions!

The profusion of fall's icons down the center speaks to the abundance of the harvest.

I was blessed by beautiful morning sunlight for the photos, something I don't always get in my east-facing dining room.

There's a lot going on in the center, but most items are low so as not to impede easy conversation across the table. The candle holders are tall but don't block the view.

Thank you, Carole! I love to set fall tables because abundance goes hand in hand with the themes of harvest and thanksgiving. I think it's fun to use different salts on a table and my guests seem to enjoy seeing and using them.

  4. Your table is gorgeous and elegant. The William Morris table runner is so pretty, and it's a classic pattern. I also love the ceramic candleholders. When I first saw them they reminded me of Newcomb pottery. I like the green glassware, but I truly have a thing for salt cellars. Nice touch! Happy Thanksgiving!

  6. Beautiful Sandra! I love the blue and green paired with the bright colors for contrast! The wallpaper designed table runner is so pretty and I like the way you did the candlesticks, and your new ceramic ones are so attractive. I also love the colorful berries and velvet pumpkins. The salt cellar is so special. I love that you always carry your theme over to the buffet, and this time you were able to use your beautiful Autumn on a Tray! Thanks so much, Linda! We were very lucky to receive the china place settings for our wedding and have added to the set over the years. I really enjoy using it for dinner parties. Of course I chose blue! I started collecting crystal candlesticks when there was a fabulous store at an outlet mall not far from us and love setting the table with them. Happy Thanksgiving!

  8. Ever the traditionalist you did not disappoint Sandra.I always look forward to your tables because I am a traditionalist in my own right. I may sway this way or that but always end up right back in my familiar and comfy territory. Your candlesticks are perfect together and with daylight savings time upon us, there is something special about soft candlelight and dinner. Your colors are wonderful through the pumpkins, berries and wallpaper design table runner. The salt cellar is lovely and I hear you on finding the correct little spoons. I also like to use a knife rest in crystal but haven't gotten them out for quite some time now. Happy Thanksgiving and Blessings to you and yours.

Thank you, Kari! I think all the details that you find in salt cellars, S&P shakers, candlesticks and things like that add so much to the experience of dining. I love using them and I love finding them wherever I can. I'm glad to see that some contemporary designers are beginning to offer similar types of things.

  9. Sandra, what a refreshing take on Thanksgiving. I love your modern interpretation. What immediately caught my eye is your table runner and the complementary orange pumpkins that run down your centerpiece on your table. Stunning! You are so right when you said the orange colors play off on the blues and greens. I absolutely love your table runner. It really sets the whole modern theme and adds to such a classic plate stack. Such a lovely wedding gift and certainly the dinnerware is timeless. Your use of green stemware adds even more interest. Such lovely colors and patterns. Such an elegant tablescape for this blessing holiday. Happy Thanksgiving.

  11. Sandra, I always love coming to your dining room to see your tablescapes. The room itself is such a beautiful color of blue, and the white trim really makes the entire room pop. Your wedding china is a timelessly beautiful choice. That William Morris table runner is so classy looking, and I love the Rookwood design on those reproduced candlesticks! I can imagine the nice glow of the candles burning over the late afternoon dinner. The centerpiece assembly is very seasonally inspiring. Thank you for being a part of this tablescape hop and bringing your classic style and talent for our readers. Happy Thanksgiving season!

Rita, thank you for your lovely comments. Though I enjoyed and commented on everyone's table in the hop, I'm a bit late thanking those who've commented on mine. I tend to collect blue table items (no surprise there!) starting with the china we selected. I'm so glad I chose a pattern that I've been able to use ever since. Once I had the table runner I knew I had complimentary things to use. Thanks again for inviting me to the hop and have a very happy Thanksgiving!

  12. Sandra, Every time I visit and see that handsome wall color, I have the urge to paint a room blue! Your table is gorgeous as well as classic and perfect for any men dining at the table, as it’s not too fussy or feminine. I’m intrigued by ceramic candlesticks using the historical mold, what a great way to enjoy new, while celebrating the old. As always, it’s a treat to have a virtual seat at your table. Wishing you a wonderful season of Thanksgiving! ๐Ÿฆƒ

Thanks so much, Mary, for your lovely comments! I had not thought about the masculine tones of my table but I'm glad that all who come to it will feel welcome. Rookwood Pottery was founded in 1880 and employed wonderful artists and craftsmen who created all types of pottery, including vases, candlesticks and wall tiles. I've always loved their designs and I'm glad that they are producing them again. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you, Kim! You're in luck! There's several companies that are selling wallpaper based on the original designs. Just google "William Morris wallpaper" (no affiliation on my part). I think it would be wonderful! I love using our wedding gifts and think it's a shame that so many young couples don't want pretty tableware that will be theirs to share for a long time. Have a very happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks, Ann! I've always been glad that we chose china that we really liked, influenced by my mother using "the good stuff" for every special dinner she hosted, and by my husband's grandmother who very much followed Southern traditions regarding setting tables. Happy Thanksgiving!
