A Haunted Table for Halloween

I freely admit that I love to decorate for Halloween! It's a chance to express my spooky — or whimsical, or silly, or scary — side and do just a little, or go all-out.

Welcome to my haunted table that has a bit of all of the above!

I'm also excited to introduce you to some stylists who also love to decorate for Halloween and are sharing their wildly different ideas in a blog hop hosted by Rita of Panoply. All their spooky info is listed at the end of this post.

I started with a paisley tablecloth in traditional fall colors, then added a 1960's aluminum ice bucket filled with the latest in black hydrangeas for a centerpiece. Glittery orange and black pumpkins and swirl picks bring color to the arrangement, as do the pumpkins surrounding it.

Spider web placemats are the perfect base for creamy dinner plates. Fearsome denizens of the night are lit by the full moon on salad plates in four eerie designs!

Bone-chilling appetizers are nestled within enamel cups.

Checked napkins in bold orange and black contrast with the paisley tablecloth which has been used in more conventional fall tables.

To reinforce the table's eerie feeling, I laid black tulle across it to mimic the look and mystery of dense fog.

Hand-crafted dragon goblets in pewter are perfect vessels for the steamy potions dreamed up by the resident mad scientist!

On the buffet are more appetizers and delectable condiments.

Savory treats seem to be spilling out of the 1930's compote.

Fog is really rolling in now!

Tonight will be haunted by bats and owls, ghosts and goblins.

And it will be frightfully fun!

  1. Wow, there is so much to love about this table. The tablecloth is so pretty, and I like the glittery pumpkins. But the plates with the giant moons in the background are the best! I really love them. I also like the black spider's web placemats and the floral arrangements with the black roses. Stunning vignette on your server! Happy Halloween!

  2. Sandra, your inner personality has really come out in this table. You have so many fun details. I love the salad plates, I haven’t seen them before. The centerpiece of black hydrangeas is perfect with the addition of the glittery orange and black pumpkins. Spiderweb placemats and tulle add texture and more drama to your table. It is a treat to be hopping with you again!

    1. Thanks, Pam! Black feels inherently dramatic, but it needed to be leavened with orange and I couldn't resist the glitter. Or going slightly overboard!

  3. Sandra I have to agree with Pam...I don't recall those salad plates and I really like them. Your illusion of fog rolling in is perfect. How clever you are. I like your use and placing of glittery pumpkins along with your vintage 1960's ice bucket and black hydrangeas. What fun we have on these blog hops.
Have a great and wonderful day.

    1. Thank you, Kari! I think WS only carried the salad plates for two years and I believe it sold out quickly. I like using vintage pieces, they have such interesting design.

  4. HI!!! I spotted that ice bucket right off the bat (pardon the spooky expression!)!!! My Mom had one very similar to it, and I hesitated to put it in the estate sale after she passed away. I ultimately decided I would let someone else enjoy it, and I hope it has a good home. This was a great idea how you used it! Oh...I'm Alycia, visiting via the Blog Hop. Nice to meet you! I LOVE that orange compote! You have some really great vintage items!!! (Weird to think that in a few short years that compote will be 100 and, therefore, officially an antique!!!) I don't know the age of the goblets, but they are a really fun addition to this table!!! They remind me of those Gothic architectural features on old buildings!!! Very nicely done!

    1. Thanks so much, Alycia! Both my husband and I have inherited an amazing array of china and glassware. Not being from the South I was a bit overwhelmed! But there were many lovely pieces we chose to keep which started me collecting. What I find utterly astounding is that glassware that wasn't particularly expensive or rare has managed to last so long with no chips or cracks!

  6. Sandra, love the balance and mix of colors, patterns, textures and Halloween elements that all work boo-fully together. Seriously, those dragon goblets --- perfect for a table setting in Game of Thrones. Each so unique and a piece of art. Mother of Dragons would be oh so envious. Wherever did you find them?

    1. Thanks, Debbee, I went a bit wild, but it's Halloween! For several years when we were first married, we went to a number of Renaissance Festivals, lol. The metal smiths there had some amazing cast pieces that my husband couldn't resist!

  7. Sandra, such a fun table. Glittery pumpkins steal the show! Oh how I love bling. Spiderweb placemats are perfect. Love the pops of orange. Your compote looks fabulous. The plates are also new to me as well. Always a pleasure Sandra to hop along with you.

    1. Thank you, Linda! Since Halloween events are usually nocturnal, you've got to have sparkle and glitter! I'm always surprised that companies will carry such great china designs for such a short time, 2 years I think for the plates.

  8. Sandra, I was just thinking how October brings out the silly part of me. Just like it did when I was a kid! The table, set with rolling fog, skeletons crawling out of black tins and all the details of the plate stack are what makes this table fun!

    1. Thanks so much, Jenna! The light of the full moon always seems spooky no matter the time of year. But now that it's casting strange shadows from the trees as they lose their leaves......shiver! Glad I could share that feeling with you! I had lots of fun with this. Have a happy Halloween.

  10. Sandra, it is fun to see your table. Like you, I can do a little or a lot, but this year I'm keeping it to a minimum. Your plates definitely offer a spooky feel..Love all your orange and black in the details. You are offering your guest a wonderful table filled with Halloween fun.

    1. Thank you, Sarah. After last year's minimalist approach (confined to the front porch), it was great fun to get back into the spirit of eerie merriment. Orange and black seem to embolden each other and are my favorite Halloween combo.

    1. Thank you, Ann! I think this is the first time I've put plaid and paisley together and I would never have guessed the occasion would be Halloween, lol. Glad you liked my combo, and my fog! I find fog spooky any time of year. The goblets are fun to use and heavier than you'd expect. Happy Haunting!

  13. Sandra, thank you for showing your Halloween spirit(s)! Wow, you have some really terrific pieces assembled here, making my vintage heart skip a beat! The ice bucket, the compote, those candlesticks - wow! And those hand-crafted pewter goblets are really special. Love the use of tulle as fog, and the overall mix of textures in the textiles. The skellies in the enamel cups made me giggle. Your trophy vases and even your lamps on the sideboard coordinate. I would love to know who made your salad plates. So glad you joined this crazy fun, very inspiring, Sandra!

    1. Thanks so much, Rita! I'm glad you enjoyed this, it was quite fun to put together. I love to mix items with a bit of history with newer things - they make it more grounded. And in this case, eerie, lol. The salad plates are Williams-Sonoma 'Halloween Moon', only sold for about 2 years in the stores. The compote and matching candlesticks are Tiffin-Fransiscan 'Amberina', received as a door prize in one of the depression glass shows I attended. I don't know who made the black vases, but they date to the 30's-40's I believe. Thanks again for coordinating this blog hop. It's been so much fun!

  14. That 60's ice bucket is timeless and fits perfectly with your table. I like the idea of mixing the traditional fall hues with the dominant ones of Halloween. Foggy tulle, brilliant! I'd be tempted to keep the hand-crafted pewter goblets out for a while, they are gorgeous. Happy Halloween!

    1. Thanks, Carol! I always seem to go back to orange and black for Halloween, though I've tried other combos. I like how each color is equally dominant I guess -- brings lots of energy.

  16. Wow Sandra, your table is full of creativity. You certainly can tell you love Halloween to put together all of these details. I really love the spooky WS Halloween Moon plates. They certainly capture the eerie Halloween spirit. And your dragon goblets are so unique and detailed. It makes me feel like I am next to a mad scientist who is working in his lab mixing up a toxic potion. The "fog" effect across your table and buffet is a nice effect and adds to the drama. Bold patterns and the use of black against the paisley or orange accents really make things pop. So spine-chillingly beautiful.

    1. Thanks so much! I think themed tablescapes really let your imagination take flight, and it's especially true for Halloween. It's so much fun to be theatrical, or mysterious, or playful. Since it only comes once a year, I don't tire of re-using elements that I've spent a number of years collecting. Mixing them sparks ideas!

  17. Gorgeous! I love how you have layered Halloween with the autumn season! Using that black tulle really does give an eerie effect. That hand crafted goblet is stunning! Your centrepiece is perfection. And, I love how you have draped those little skeletons into the little black cups! So cute!

    1. Thank you, Maureen, for your sweet comments! I'm so glad you enjoyed my table. I did want to 'ground' Halloween decorations in fall season trappings, because I can't really imagine Halloween happening any other time of the year. Something about October's still fall evenings, the only sound the (constant, for us) dropping of acorns and the rustle of leaves. Ooooh, shivers! lol

  18. Sandra, your table is such spooky fun! I adore those bat plates and love how each one has a different motif. I've never seen black hydrangeas before. They make a perfect Halloween centerpiece! The dragon goblets are so unique and are right at home on this table. I love how you decorated the buffet, as well. It was nice hopping with you. Happy Halloween!

    1. Thanks, Rebecca! I'm very glad I spotted those plates in the brief time they were available. I so enjoy using them! This is the first time I had seen hydrangeas in black. I think they have a softer look than the black roses I'm familiar with (which are on the buffet). The hop was great fun!
