There’s a Full Moon Rising . . .

And so October begins . . . the changing of the seasons, the slow then quick color wash of spectacular golds and reds and oranges.

And at its end, the transformation of colors that become first bleak, then foreboding, signaling that Halloween has come!

If that gives you a slight shiver — welcome to the Halloween Tablescape Blog Hop where you'll be introduced to a selection of spooky, whimsical, or scary themes limited only by our imagination!

I began with a table-topper in heart-throbbing orange covered in all the expected spooky motifs in black. In the middle I set an elegant glass vase filled with black roses and deep purple raven feathers.

There will be a full moon rising in the days before Halloween, which inspired the theme for my tablescape. But how to carry it out? Without a second thought I chose the set of salad plates which also features iconic images set against full moons in shades of gray, black and ghostly ivory. A somber owl is being harassed by territorial bats.

Frolicking ghosts have joined the fun.

While at another place setting the bats fill the skies! The salad plates nestle into vintage dinner plates with ornate scrolling and equally ornate candlesticks hold pillar candles. To match their formality, I've used lovely crystal wine and champagne goblets with modern lines and gleaming black stems.

Dessert will be served in mini cauldrons after the pesky spiders are removed.

A witch appears among the bats. Notice how the plates moodily portray the moon's dark volcanic plains called maria, rugged light-colored highlands, and countless impact craters formed by asteroids and meteoroids.

An inquisitive witch has left her dusty library and flies high above the table.

The fourth salad plate again features bats, while a wide-eyed cat catches a mouse. Beyond the place setting is a second set of salt and pepper shakers in bone-chillingly white.

Hand-crafted steel cats hold patterned napkins.

Silvered charge plates will catch both the candlelight and moonlight shining through the doors.

The witch hasn't graced my tablescapes in quite awhile. It's high time she made an appearance!

Bats have entered her library!

An elegant yet fiendishly macabre tablescape!

  2. The tablecloth is phenomenal! Talk about eye-catching. And I love everything that you used here, particularly those bat plates. I have a particular liking for bats. I was also quite taken with those metal cat napkin rings. I’ve never seen anything like that and I love them. Beautiful job overall.

  3. Sandra your table is perfectly orchestrated. The bright orange tablecloth is striking, the moon, bat, and cat plates enhance your title of full moon rising. The black vase and black flowers set the stage for eerie conversation over dinner. I can see your guests slowly removing the spooky metal cat napkin rings as they prepare their black and white napkins on their lap. If they happen to glance up...there she is,..... presiding over the table....just daring anyone to say or do something the ole' witch disapproves of and who knows what she might do? I would watch the little cauldrons very carefully because one never knows if the spiders might just crawl out and up one's sleeve. All in all...a delightful table waiting for the unexpected to happen...after all...it IS Halloween. Have a great and wonderful October week!

  5. Love all the references to nature from the bats to the ravens and how you depict them all in black with that deep orange tablecloth. I particularly liked the feathers paired with the roses.. The metal cat rings are a great touch and work perfectly with your table. The full moon offers so much mystery and illumination in one package. It is a perfect addition to a Halloween night. Wishing you a wonderful halloween.

  6. Oh, what a spooky setting, Sandra. Each detail lends a special touch for a full moon rising. Especially love the owl plates! Also love the idea of the feathers in with the flowers. When I lost Monnie, my sister brought me a bouquet of feathers from her rooster. I still have them sitting in a vase on my desk. Perfect! Thanks for sharing your creative table. Happy Halloween!

  9. Sandra, wow! From the dramatic centerpiece and elegant dinner plates, candlesticks and glassware, to the eerie images of the full moon salads, you've set a perfectly moody Halloween table that pairs with all the unexpected reality of a full.moon encounter! I love those salad plates! The whimsy of the witch (is she a Mark Roberts?), the ghost and bone salt and peppers amd cat bapkin rings all keep things a bit lighter, but the overall drama grounded in that table runner leave no doubt to the pull a full moon rising can bring. Your talent in assembling all these details for us are certainly appreciated, I have to say I am always relieved when a full moon is past! Happy rest of October!
