Dinner for Two

Dinner for two - what was once an indulgence is now the norm for us since our daughter headed off to college. Most dinners are pretty casual, in the breakfast room with our everyday table settings.

But I think there's every reason to take dinner out of the ordinary sometimes. And what better time than a birthday!

Greg's birthday comes between winter holidays. I had taken photos as the sun set, but had not yet used them for a post. For this dinner, I used china that he likes very much and chose items that continued the same classic design.

The china has a gray band with a tiny design in navy, edged with platinum. We have only two place settings of the china, but that worked perfectly for a dinner for just us.

To pick up the color from the plate design, I used vintage blue stemware (first seen here) and a pale blue tablecloth and napkins in a woven floral pattern.

I like the way the wavy edge of the silver chargers played with the light. Sparkling silver shone on the table, including our wedding silverware and the entwined napkin rings.

The Grecian lines of the vintage water pitcher complement the classic design of the plates.

We thought the shape of the antique covered dish was unique. Although it's hard to tell in this photo, the feet are solid spheres.

The compote with delicate glass candies was a stand-in for the cake we had for Greg on the following weekend when our daughter was able to join us.

A deep blue glass vase I received many years ago served as the centerpiece, filled with simple faux flowers. The turquoise on the rim and interior gives the vase an unexpected flair.

Thank you for coming!

  1. Oh I bet your hubby was very happy to have such a special table set to celebrate his birthday! The silver pieces are just beautiful! I gave away almost all of my silver in the 80's when I didn't think it was in style anymore. Now I could kick myself! I still have a very few pieces that I should shine up and USE! Thanks for the inspiration!!

    1. You're welcome! I didn't start collecting silver pieces until we began hosting cocktail parties for work colleagues and I discovered the wonderful world of silver trays. It sort of ballooned from there. Thanks for visiting!
